Use ubuntu to Watch Videos on you xbox and iPad

Streaming video to your xbox and ipad from your ubuntu machine.

1. First install ushare

sudo apt-get install ushare

2. ushare will start but you need to stop it to configure it

/etc/init.d/ushare stop

3. Configure ushare

sudo gedit /etc/ushare.conf

use the defaults

USHARE_PORT=49200

Setup your share directories using the examples:

USHARE_DIR=/home/yourusername/Movies, /media/otherdrive/movies, etc…

Turn on the web interface:

ENABLE_WEB=yes

Turn on xbox:

ENABLE_XBOX=yes

Save and exit

4. Next configure mime types

sudo gedit /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml

search for x-msvideo

change to

x-ms-wmv

save and exit

5. Reboot the computer then in terminal use the command

ushare -x

to start the server

open a terminal and type ushare -x

The server should now show up on your xbox in the video section

To play on your ipad you will need the app Media Connect and the FlexPlayer. (Free:3 videos only, 4.99:unlimited videos)

Notes:
To send via wireless (and maybe wired) you must enable UPnP on router
xBox codec that works: 384 x 224 Divx mpeg 4 ver. 5 24fps mpeg 1 audio layer 3 (mp3) 48000hz, 72kbps
